San Diego as a Logistics Hub: Opportunities for Pallet Buyers

San Diego's logistics infrastructure is expanding rapidly. New warehouse developments, cross-border trade growth, and e-commerce demand are creating opportunities — and challenges — for pallet procurement.

San Diego's Logistics Evolution

San Diego has traditionally been overshadowed by Los Angeles and the Inland Empire as a logistics hub. That is changing. Over the past three years, San Diego County has seen significant investment in warehouse and distribution center construction, particularly in the Otay Mesa, Chula Vista, and eastern county corridors. This growth is driven by cross-border trade with Mexico, proximity to the port, military logistics, and the region's expanding e-commerce fulfillment capacity.

Cross-Border Trade Is Accelerating

The Otay Mesa commercial port of entry is one of the busiest land crossings in the Western Hemisphere. Trade volume between San Diego and Baja California has grown approximately 15% since 2022, driven by nearshoring trends as manufacturers move operations closer to U.S. markets. This cross-border activity generates significant pallet demand — both for outbound shipments requiring ISPM 15 compliance and for receiving operations that need to manage incoming pallets from Mexican suppliers.

E-Commerce Fulfillment Growth

Several major e-commerce brands have established or expanded fulfillment operations in San Diego County over the past two years. These operations are pallet-intensive — a single large fulfillment center can consume 500 to 2,000 pallets per week. The growth of this sector has tightened the local used pallet market, particularly for Grade A pallets that meet the dimensional consistency requirements of automated fulfillment systems.

Military Logistics Demand

San Diego is home to the largest concentration of military installations on the U.S. West Coast, including Naval Base San Diego, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, and Camp Pendleton. Military logistics operations consume pallets at scale and generate a significant stream of returned pallets. This creates both demand and supply-side dynamics that are unique to the San Diego market.

What This Means for Pallet Buyers

The growth trajectory creates both opportunities and risks for pallet buyers. On the opportunity side: increased logistics activity generates more used pallets flowing into the resale market, which improves long-term supply. On the risk side: short-term demand growth is outpacing supply growth, which means tighter availability and modest price increases. Buyers who establish reliable supplier relationships and plan their procurement proactively will navigate this transition more smoothly.

Positioning Your Business

Three actions position your business well in the evolving San Diego pallet market. First, secure a supply relationship with a local supplier who understands the regional dynamics and can provide reliable access. Second, consider annual supply agreements that provide pricing stability as the market tightens. Third, participate in the circular economy by selling back your used pallets — this supports the supply side of the market you depend on and generates revenue for your operation.
